25 Feb 2011- Solid wood is the wood that is cut into
boards from the trunk of the tree. Solid wood basically do not have any
hollow spaces. Interiors of modern homes are adorned with solid wood
furniture and the highlight of this type of furniture is that is that all
exposed parts are made of the same species of all natural wood, and there is
no inclusion of any other materials. Wood veneer is a thin slice of wood or
real wood cut from log. A sawing machine is used to cut a thin slice of
veneer from log. Both solid wood and veneer wood has been used in the making
of furniture from a very long time and both have their respective merits and
demerits. It is to be noted that all-
wood
furniture is not always solid wood. A veneer wood can achieve the same
look as solid wood at a much lower rate than solid lumber.
Advantages of Solid Wood Furniture
- Solid wood furniture is durable. All types of scratches, dents, water
marks, dings, stains can all be repaired. But then if the damage is
more, the cost of repairing also becomes expensive but it is less
expensive than veneer furniture.
- Solid wood furniture is more charming and attractive than others.
This type of furniture has a smooth surface and the continuous grain
pattern from top to the bottom and hence adds to the beauty of the
furniture piece.
Disadvantages of Solid Wood Furniture
The main disadvantage of
solid wood furniture is it splits or cracks when exposed to extreme
atmospheric conditions. It will expand or contract, and may split along the
grain of the wood. As a rule, do not place furniture directly under strong
sunlight or direct heat sources.
Veneer surface is very thin
which lead to its disadvantages. Veneer wood furniture is very difficult to
repair.
